Anyone who believes that they have been treated illegally or unfairly by their employer does not have to pay a fee to take their employer to court. Previously, if an employee wanted to pursue a case against their employer they would have had to pay as much as £1,200. This resulted in many low-income workers not gaining Access to Justice. In July 2017 the Supreme Court – the UK’s highest court – unanimously ruled that the government was acting unlawfully and therefore employees no longer have to pay. This will undoubtedly mean that there will be an increase in the number of business owners & employers being taken to court.
